President Donald Trump has signed an enforcement order, sanctioning the International Criminal Court, accusing him of “illegitimate and unfounded actions aimed at America and our close ally Israel.”
The measure puts financial and visa restrictions on individuals and their families who support ICC investigations for US citizens or allies.
In January, the Chamber of US Representatives voted for the sanction of the ICC after issuing arrest orders for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Minister of Defense Ioas Gallant over the allegations of war crimes in Gaza, which Israel denies. ICC also issued an order for Hamas Commander.
At that time, the ICC stated that “regretted all attempts to undermine independence, integrity and impartiality of the court.”
The United States is not a member of the ICC and has repeatedly rejected any jurisdiction from the authority over US officials or citizens.
The order states that the latest actions of ICC “set a dangerous precedent” that threatens Americans by exposing them to “harassment, abuse and possible arrest.”
“This malignant behavior, in turn, threatens to violate the sovereignty of the United States and undermines the critical work of national security and the foreign policy of the United States and our allies, including Israel,” the order said.
The White House accuses the Hague MKK of creating a “shameful moral equivalence” between Hamas and Israel, issuing an order for Israeli leaders and Hamas commander earlier, according to a factual sheet distributed by the White House earlier.
The White House believes that the ICC sets restrictions on Israel’s right to self -defense while accusing the body of ignoring Iran and anti -Israeli groups.
Trump has repeatedly criticized the ICC and has taken several steps to sanction the organ during its first term.
At the time, he also imposed sanctions on the ICC staff who investigated whether US forces had committed war crimes in Afghanistan.
The order allowed the US to block the assets of ICC employees and prevent them from entering the United States.
In response, ICC said sanctions were “an unacceptable attempt to interfere with the rule of law”.
Founded in 2002 – after the dissolution of Yugoslavia and the genocide of Rwanda – MNS, it was formed to investigate alleged atrocities.
The court may deal with crimes committed after July 2002, when the status of Rome – which formed the ICC came into force.
More than 120 countries have ratified the Statute, while another 34 have signed and can ratify in the future.
Neither the US nor Israel are a party in the Roman Statute. The order states that “both nations flourish democracies with military, which strictly adhere to the laws of war.”
ICC is a court for the last resort and aims to intervene only when national authorities cannot or will not pursue.
Trump’s predecessor Joe Biden also criticizes the ICC’s orders about Netanyahu and Gallant, calling this move “outrageous” and says there is no equivalence between Israel and Hamas.
Trump’s signing for the executive order comes when Netanyahu visits Washington.
At a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister, Trump said that the United States could “take” a gas, which he said could become the “Riviera of the Middle East”.
He again made the claim of his truth social media platform.
“The Gaza Strip will be handed over to the United States from Israel at the end of the battles,” Trump said on Thursday.
He reiterated his belief that the idea would mean resetting the Palestinians and that there were no US soldiers to be located.
His post was not clear whether the two million inhabitants of the Palestinian territory would be invited to return, leaving employees to break up to explain.
On Wednesday, White House press secretary Carolyn Levitt said any displacement would be temporary until Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Gazanas would leave for an “intermediate” period while the reconstruction was being held.
Arab leaders, human rights organizations have condemned the idea.
