Watch: Emergency crews deal with fires in Spain and Portugal

Spain sent 500 more troops to fight the raging fires, with the total total deployed by 1900, as the death number of flames increased to four.

On Sunday, a firefighter died after an incident during the fire department’s efforts when his truck fell down a steep hill, according to the regional government of Castile and Leon.

Spain Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed “sadness” and “clogging” of X at the last death.

In neighboring Portugal, where fires also blazed, another firefighter was killed on Sunday in a “tragic” road accident, said President Marcelo Rebelo de Susa.

The fires also broke out in Greece, France, Turkey and the Balkans, as the heat wave was burned from southern Europe.

Across Europe several countries are fighting fires

Several large fires are still burning to the northwest and west of Spain, where 27,000 residents are currently evacuated from their homes.

Castile and Leon are the most closed area, with the local radio media station reporting on Monday that the air is “unfavorable” due to smoke.

A fire in the western province of Caceres is still out of control and has burned 11,000 hectares (27 181 acres).

Twelve fires are burned in the northwestern region of Galicia, most in the province of ours, with the largest burning 17,500 hectares.

The fires on Sunday were left at least five people injured in Castile and Leon, four of them in critical condition.

Last week, two volunteers died, fighting fires in Leon. Another man died in Tres Kantos near Madrid after a fire broke out.

This year alone, about 343,000 hectares have burned in Spain, according to the European Forest Fire Information System (Effis) – close to doubling the sum of the previous year.

Over the weekend, the Spain Civil Guard said they had offered “sanctions” to four people to carry out unauthorized burns in Coruna in the Galicia region.

Causing a fire is a crime in Spain, even by accident.

People in Spain have been forced to escape from their homes to avoid flames

Neighboring Portugal also had to fight fires since the end of July, with the North and the Center of the country most difficult to affect.

President Marcelo Rebello de Susa conveyed his “deepest sympathy” to the family of the victims of the firefighter killed in an incident on Sunday. The other two firefighters were also injured.

In 2025, Effis reported that Portugal’s wild fires had burned around 216,000 hectares of land.

Spain and Portugal have activated the European Civil Protection Mechanism, according to which countries may request emergency care.

Firefighters from other countries have been sent to fight fires in Spain and both countries will receive two aircraft to fight fire.

Wild fires are a common phenomenon in Southern Europe in the summer, but their weight can often be exacerbated by heat wave conditions.

Meteorologists say that such extremes are becoming more frequent and intense due to human-induced climatic changes.

Climate change causes the time to become more so, according to studies by the State Meteorological Agency of Spain.
