Two people were fatally shot in a mountain community in the Western US Idaho while responding to a brush fire, employees say.
The Cottenayy County County Sheriff Robert Norris said that at least one active shooter had fired at law enforcement with a powerful rifle near the city of Core D’Ant.
“We actively take on sniper fire as we talk,” Sheriff Norris said, adding that the officers have reported bullets coming from different directions. Residents are asked to avoid the scene of the Kenfield Mountain.
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said the agents were in charge of “providing tactical and operational support”. Governor Brad Little said “many heroic firefighters” were attacked.
“This is a disgusting direct attack by our brave firefighters,” the governor published to X. “Please all Idahoans to pray for them and their families as we wait to learn more.”
He added: “As this situation is still developing, please remain aware of the area to allow law enforcement agencies and firefighters to do their job.”
Sheriff Norris said at a press conference on Sunday that “we don’t know if there are one, two, three or four” scenery shooters, about four miles (6.5 km) north of the central cour d’Ald.
“We do not know how suspects they are there and we don’t know how many casualties there are,” he said.
Sheriff Norris said the authorities believed the two killed were firefighters.
“I hope someone has a clear shot and is able to neutralize because at that moment it does not show evidence of desire to surrender,” the sheriff added.
He told reporters that there were civilians on the Kenfield Mountain, which was crossed with pedestrian and cycling paths, so “it would be safe to assume that” others are still up.
Sheriff Norris said the brush fire call came around 13:22 local time (19:22 GMT) on Sunday. At 14:00 firefighters reported shots.
The brush fire was still burning in the shootout.
Local head of the fire department, Pat Riley, told the KHQ television station that it was “broken by the heart” by the attack.
The Emergency Situations Management Office of Kootenai County sent a signal asking people to avoid the area around Mountain Trailhead on Canfield and Nettleton Gulch Road.
