Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski emphasized that he would not make territorial discounts to Russia before a meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin about the future of the war in Ukraine.
The US-Russia meeting is Should be held in Alaska on August 15S
Hours before announcing the meeting, Trump had signaled that Ukraine may have to retreat territory to end the war that began with Russia’s full invasion in February 2022.
Zelenski said in a Telegram publication on Saturday that “Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier.” He reiterated that Ukraine should participate in any peace decision and said he was ready to work with partners for “real” and “lasting” peace.
Zelenski said Ukraine “would not give Russia awards for what it did.”
“The answer to the Ukrainian territorial question is already in the constitution of Ukraine. No one has and can deviate from it,” he added.
His statement followed comments from Trump in the White House on Friday that “there will be some exchange of territories to improve both.”
“You are watching a territory that has been fighting for three and a half years, many Russians have died. Many Ukrainians have died,” the US president said.
He did not provide further details about what such a proposal would look like.
Later, Trump announced the meeting between himself and Putin, saying that additional details would follow. Later, the meeting was confirmed by the Kremlin.
Zelenski said on Saturday that Ukraine is ready for “real solutions that can bring peace,” but stressed that Ukraine should participate.
“Any decisions that are against us, all decisions that are without Ukraine are both solutions to peace,” he said.
“We are ready, along with President Trump, along with all the partners, to work for a real and most important, lasting peace – peace that will not collapse because of Moscow’s wishes.”
