The UN Human Rights Service has condemned a targeted Israeli attack, which killed six journalists in Gaza, calling it a “serious violation” of international humanitarian law.
Five Al Jazeera journalists, including prominent correspondent Anas Al-Sharif, were killed in Israeli air strike on Sunday night, along with sixth freelance journalist.
The Israeli military said he was heading for Sharif, claiming he “served as the head of a terrorist cell in Hamas.”
Groups and countries of the media, including Qatar, have condemned the attack. Prime Minister Sir Kiir Starmer spokesman said the United Kingdom government was “seriously concerned” and called for an independent investigation.
Speaking to reporters, Starmer’s official spokesman said Israel should ensure that journalists can work safely and report without fear.
Sharif’s funerals, Al Jazeera’s correspondent associate Mohammed Qreiqeh and operators Ibrahim Sacher, Mohammed Nufal and Moamen Aliva took place on Monday after the target blow to their tent rocket in Gaza.
Mohammed Al-Haldi has been appointed by the medical hospital at Al Spofa Hospital as a sixth journalist killed during the strike, Reuters reported. Another person was also killed in the attack, he said.
Reporters without borders, a media freedom group, have strongly condemned what called Sharif’s murder.
The Association of the Foreign Press said it was outraged by the target murder. It states that the Israeli military has repeatedly referred to the Palestinian journalists “like fighters, often without checking evidence.”
The Committee on Journalists (CPJ) said it was horrified by the attack and Israel did not provide evidence to support its allegations against it.
“Israel has a long -time, documented model of accusation of journalists for being terrorists without providing reliable evidence,” the organization added.
The Israeli military suggested that there were documents found in Gaza, which confirm that Sharif belongs to Hamas.
It says they include “staff lists, lists of terrorist training courses, telephone directories and pay documents”.
The only materials that were released for publication are screenshots of spreadsheets, which obviously list Hamas’s operating persons from the northern Gaza lane, noting injuries to Hamas’s operating persons and part of what is said to be a telephone indication of the battalion of the Eastern Jabalia of the armed group.
The BBC cannot independently check these documents.
The BBC understands that Sharif worked for a Hamas media team in Gaza before the current conflict.
Israel says he was “the head of a Hamas terrorist cell”, but has presented little evidence to support it.
In some of his publications on social media before his death, the journalist may be heard to criticize Hamas.
So far, no Israeli explanation has been given about the murder of the entire Al Jazeera News team.
CPJ says at least 186 journalists have been killed since the beginning of the Israeli military offensive in Gaza in October 2023 -the most deadly period for journalists as he began to record similar data in 1992.
“Israel must respect and defend all civilians, including journalists,” said the UN Human Rights Service in an X. We call for immediate, safe and unobstructed access to gas for all journalists. “
Last month BBC and three other news agencies – Reuters, AP and AFP – issued A joint statement expressing “Desperate concern” for journalists in the strip, which they say are increasingly unable to feed themselves and their families.
The Israeli government does not allow international news organizations, including the BBC, in GAZA to report freely, so many retail outlets rely on Gaza -based reporters.
Meanwhile, more people have been killed in Gaza from malnutrition in the last 24 hours, including one child, according to Hamas Health Ministry.
This has led the total number of deaths to 222, including 101 children, the health ministry said.
The UN Humanitarian Agency said on Friday that the amount of aid entering Gaza continues to be “far below the minimum needed to meet the huge needs of people.” Last month, supported by the UN for global food security, they warned that the “worst hunger scenario” was currently being played out.
Israel continues to deny that there is a hunger in gas and accused the UN agencies of raising help in the borders and delivering it.
The UN Humanitarian Agency said it continues to see obstacles and delays as it tries to collect help from the border areas controlled by Israeli.
Israel launched its offensive in response to the attack, led by Hamas against South Israel on October 7, 2023, which killed about 1,200 people and 251 others were taken hostage.
Since then, 61 430 people have been killed in Gaza as a result of Israel’s military campaign, according to the health ministry.
