Vanuatu PM cancels the passport of former cricket IPL cricket

Vanuatu’s Prime Minister ordered the cancellation of a passport issued by the island state, a fugitive of Indian businessman Lalith Modi, who was wanted by Delhi in a corruption case.

The order came three days after India confirmed that Modi had received a citizenship of Vanuatu, a series of more than 80 islands in the Pacific.

Modi, the former Chief of the Indian Premier League (IPL), was wanted for the alleged offers of offers during his term as the head of the most rich cricket tournament in the world.

Modi, who has lived in the UK since 2010, has always denied the allegations.

India made several unsuccessful attempts to extradite it.

On Friday, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaicwal told reporters that Modi had applied to hand over his Indian passport in London.

“We are also allowed to understand that he has acquired the citizenship of Vanuatu. We continue to pursue the case against him as required under the law,” Jasaval said.

“Any such signal would automatically cause the Citizenship application for G -H Modi,” the newspaper added.

This move will probably bring relief to the Indian authorities. Unlike the United Kingdom, Vanuatu does not have an extradition contract with India.

Extradition contracts allow repatriation of people accused of crimes between countries.
