Ghetto imagesRussian President Vladimir Putin said he had agreed to the idea of ending the fire in Ukraine, but these “questions” remain for the nature of the truce while he defines a number of difficult conditions.
The Russian president was in charge Plan for a 30-day termination of firewhich Ukraine agreed earlier this week after talks with the United States.
Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski described Putin’s answer to the plan as “manipulative” and called for more sanctions against Russia.
Meanwhile, the United States has put more sanctions in the Russian oil, gas and banking sector.
Telling a press conference in Moscow on Thursday, Putin said of the proposal to end the fire: “The idea is right – and we support it – but there are questions that we need to discuss.”
The cessation of fire should lead to “lasting peace and eliminate the main causes of this crisis,” Putin said.
“We have to negotiate with our American colleagues and partners,” he said. “Maybe I’ll call Donald Trump.”
Putin added: “It will be good for the Ukrainian side to achieve a 30-day cessation of fire.
“We are in favor of this, but there are nuances.”
One of the controversial areas is the Russian Kursk region, Putin said, where Ukraine began a military invasion last year and took over some territory.
He claims that Russia is completely back into the control of Kursk and said that Ukrainian troops were “being isolated” there.
“They are trying to leave, but we control. Their equipment is abandoned.”
“There are two options for Ukrainians in Kursk – transmission or dying.”
Drawing some of his questions about how will the truce work, Putin asked, “How will these 30 days be used? To mobilize Ukraine? Or teach people? Or none of that? Then a question – how will this be controlled?”
“Who will give the warring order? At what price? Who decides who has violated the possible termination of fire, over 2,000 km? All these questions need thorough work on both sides. Who polishes it?”
Putin “doesn’t say no directly,” Zelenski said in his night video address, but “practically he prepares rejection.”
“Putin, of course, is afraid to tell President Trump directly that he wants to continue this war, wants to kill the Ukrainians.”
The Russian leader had set so many preconditions, “that nothing will work at all,” Zelenski said.
After Putin’s remarks and Zelenski’s response, there is now a clear division between the positions of both sides.
Ukraine wants a two -step process: a quick cessation of fire and then talks about a long -term agreement.
Russia believes that you cannot divide the two processes and all problems must be solved in one deal. Both sides seem to be satisfied to justify their differences.
Ukraine believes that he can put pressure on Russia by painting it as a reluctant peacekeeper, playing for time. Russia equally considers it a chance to now arouse its main concerns about the NATO expansion and the sovereignty of Ukraine.
But this is a problem for Donald Trump. He made it clear that he wanted a quick result, ending the fighting in days.
And now Putin doesn’t seem to want to play a ball.
Ghetto imagesSpeaking to the White House after Putin’s remarks, Trump said he would “love” to meet with the Russian leader and that he hoped Russia would “do” right “and agree with the proposed 30-day truce.
“We would like to see the cessation of fire from Russia,” he said.
Speaking earlier at a meeting in the oval office with NATO Secretary General Mark Rute, Trump told reporters that he had already discussed the specifics of Ukraine.
“We discussed with Ukraine land and pieces of land that will be preserved and lost, and all other elements of a final agreement,” Trump said.
“Many of the details of the final agreement were actually discussed.”
On the topic of Ukraine, which joins the NATO Military Union, Trump said that “everyone knows what the answer is.”
The new sanctions on Russian oil and gas came when the Trump administration further limited access to payment systems in the United States, which made it difficult for other countries to buy Russian oil.
In the meantime, Putin met with us the special envoy Steve Vikof behind closed doors in Moscow.
