The day began with the same heart routine that the White House reserves to visit foreign dignitaries.
Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski was greeted by US President Donald Trump at the west wing door with honorary security and leaders shook hands.
We were in the oval office as part of the Ukrainian media pool, witnessing the well -rehearsed formalities and about half an hour of polite conversations.
Zelenski presented the Trump Champions Belt of Ukrainian boxer Alexander Usik.
Trump compliments Zelenski’s clothes.
So far, so diplomatic.
But minutes later, what broke out was the least unprecedented. The brilliant tone has become acromonia and chaos. Voices were raised, their eyes tingled, asseren, thrown – and everyone in front of the world television cameras.
The President of the United States and the Vice President imposed a guest leader, accusing Zelenski of not grateful enough for the support of the United States, who maintained the military efforts of Ukraine.
The tension flashed when Vice President JD Vance told Zelenski that the war should be completed through diplomacy.
What diplomacy answered Zelenski.
Talking about the Ukrainian president, Vance told the guest leader that it was “disrespectful” to come to the oval office and make his work before the US media and asked to thank Trump for his leadership.
The journalists in the room looked at the gaping mouth as there was an exceptional exchange.
“You talked enough. You don’t earn this,” Trump told him at one point. “You have to be grateful. You don’t have the cards.”
“I don’t play cards,” Zelenski replied. “I’m very serious, a president. I’m president at war.”
“You bet on a gambling with the Third World War,” Trump replied. “And what you do is very disrespectful to the country, this country, this supported you a lot more than many people said they should have.”
Vance replied, “Did you say” thank you “after this whole meeting? No. ”
The Ukraine ambassador to the United States was looking with his head in his hands.
The atmosphere has shifted completely – and all outdoors.
Our American colleagues noted that they had never seen anything like that. “A scene like this was just unthinkable in the White House,” one told me.
As the reporters were leaving the oval office, many stood motionless in a state of shock. In the White House briefing, where the exchange was reproduced shortly after, the other media, who were not in the room, looked at incredulously.
There was confusion. There were immediate questions about whether the planned press conference would continue-or whether the highly anticipated deal between the US and Ukraine for mineral resources would even be signed.
Minutes later, Trump wrote to Truth Social that Zelenski can “return when he is ready for peace.”
The press conference and the signing of transactions is to be held in the Eastern Room of the White House – it has been officially canceled.
Shortly after Zelenski went out and in a waiting SUV while his ambassador gave up behind him.
They pulled away as the world was just beginning to absorb an exceptional moment.
Despite the full argument, there may still be a mineral deal sooner or later.
But one thing is for sure: this visit to Zelenski will be remembered for completely different reasons.
The world saw firsthand how negotiations between the US and Ukraine develop: they are difficult, emotional and tense.
It was clear that this was serious negotiations for both parties.
The gift of Ukrainian boxer Alexander Usik’s belt certainly did not save the situation. And after this match in the White House, the real question now is what it means about the war in Ukraine – and the Future of Zelenski’s own future.
