ReutersA large -scale earthquake of 8.8 magnitude off the coastal coast of Russia has sparked tsunami warnings across the Pacific.
It is believed that the earthquake that struck near Russia in the Kamchatka Peninsula at about 11:25 on Wednesday (00:25 BST) is one of the most powerful ever recorded.
More than two million people have been ordered to evacuate in Japan, Russia and some parts of the US West Coast.
Alerts were also issued in China, Philippines, Indonesia, New Zealand and even to Peru and Mexico.
Videos appeared showing large waves that developed past buildings in the city of North Kurilsk, Russia. Authorities claim that 4 million (13 feet) waves have flooded the port and a fish processing facility, and the ships were swept away by their mooring. A strong network was also damaged in the Russian region of Sakhalin.
In Japan, about 1.9 million people were asked to evacuate and authorities called on residents to reach higher. The initial waves reaching the country are relatively small, but its meteorological agency says they can grow to 3m (9.8 feet).
Hawaii staff first warned of a possible 10 feet of waves, but a tsunami warning, covering the island, has already been reduced to a consultative level, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported.
This means that there is the potential of strong waves, minor floods and strong currents, but tsunami is not expected to be hit. These evacuated can return home, said Stephen Logan, director of Hawaii’s Emergency Situations Management Agency.
So far, the damage does not look as bad as they were afraid first – although tsunami waves continue through the Pacific.
“Even now, scientists are managing new models to try to improve their initial forecasts,” Chris Goldfinger, Professor of Maritime Geology at Oregon State University, told the BBC Surke.
“Every country, every port and every coastline will experience a very specific answer to the site. Some places it will be quite minimal, some quite serious.”
He said that the degree of impact largely depends on the path of energy emitted by the Russian Peninsula Kamchatka. The areas are expected directly in accordance with this energy – approximately southeast of the epicenter – to be most affected.
He said it took about “eight to nine o’clock” to reach the west coast of the United States.
The earthquake struck around 11:25 am local time (00:25 pm BST) on Wednesday.
Tsunami waves struck parts of the west coast of North America around 12.20pm local time (09.20 am BST).
The waves are then expected to hit areas, including the port of Tacom in Washington at 2.20 (11.20 am BST) and NOME, Alaska at 03.20 (12.20 am BST).
“A good rule for tsunami waves is that they travel around the speed of a jet aircraft,” Helen Janishevski, Assistant to Geophysics and Tectonics at the University of Hawaii, told the BBC.
“So if you remember how long it will take to travel by plane from one place to another, it is how long it takes to travel from Quake Epicenter to hit another place,” she said.
The geological survey of the United States said the earthquake is a relatively shallow-depth at a depth of 19.3 km (12 miles) and is focused 119 km east-southeast by Petropavlovski-Kamchac.
It was originally recorded as an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.0, but later reworked up. A series of strong afters are also recorded.
It is bound by the sixth most earthquake in history, such as the 2010 earthquake in Biobio, Chile and the 1906 earthquake in Esmeraldas, Ecuador.
The fifth most earthquake was also in Kamchatka end, Russia, in 1952. It was “the first earthquake in the world 9”.
For comparison, the Indian Ocean earthquake in 2004 and the tsunami – with over 227,000 people – a magnitude 9.2-9.3 magnitude.
This struck approximately 160 km by the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia – a densely populated area. The Russian Kamchatka Peninsula has a very low population density.
