Ghetto imagesCalifornia and Texas legislators – the two most populated US states, which together contain more than 70 million Americans – are at the center of an intense political battle that is ready to have a great influence on the balance of power in Washington.
After Texas has adopted a redistribution measure, which will create five more places in the Congress, in favor of the Republicans, the legislators of California gave up on Thursday, voting to re -withstand the state’s cards – carefully made to cancel this move of Texas. California cards will go to voters in November.
This political race for power may seem both bizarre and confusing – but it may spread to other countries before the national intermediate elections next year.
Here’s what you need to know about America’s struggle for congress redistribution.
The battle began in Texas this summer, when the legislation of the Republican majority took the unusual step of re-drawing congress places in the middle of the decade, in deliberate efforts to send more Republicans to the House of Representatives in Washington.
The goal of Lone Star State was to add five additional places to the Congress, which would favor Republicans. California replied by re -downloading its own areas to strengthen the democratic representation with five places, in an attempt to cancel the course of Texas.
The House of US Representatives is made up of 435 legislators who are selected every two years.
They are areas with boundaries set out in the processes set by their government governments. Some countries have non -party independent committees that determine the regions, while others leave it to the state legislative body.
Whoever extracts the lines and how it can go a long way in shaping the ideological slope of the area and the likelihood of it choosing a Democrat or a Republican.
Currently, the house is resting on the edge of the knife, with the Democrats just having to seize three more places to turn the camera into their balance.
The President’s President Historically loses places in the intermediate elections after their victory.
If the Democrats are taking over the Chamber, they can launch extensive investigations into presidential action, as the Democrats did in the second half of Donald Trump’s first term and have done Joe Biden in the last two years.
Ghetto imagesEach member of the US house is an area in their home country. The areas are usually determined after the US census takes place every decade to take into account changes in the population of countries.
But Republicans and Democrats are now struggling to redirect cards in the mid -decades, or to help or block Trump’s agenda. Changing the makeup in the areas, every party hopes to capture more places in the house.
Trump has called on the Republican -controlled state houses across the country to withdraw their districts again to try to prevent their party from losing control of the House of Election in November.
But efforts in Texas struck an obstacle in early August after the state’s democrats fled the state in an attempt to deny the quorum needed to pass the Republican redistribution measure.
They returned after two weeks when the governor ordered them to be arrested. After they returned, the Chamber voted 88-52 to create five new places.
The measure was quickly approved by the Senate and is now expected to receive the signature of Governor Greg Abat before becoming a law.
Gerimanje – the redirection of electoral borders to support the political party – is practiced by both major parties and is legal, unless it is rendered racially motivated.
However, it is extremely unusual for the president to support the state’s efforts to create a guerrilla advantage, As Trump did with Texas. While both the democratic and the Republican -dominated countries are facing criticism and court battles for their cards in the United States, rarely, deputies explicitly recognize the guerrilla intention behind their actions, as the MPs in Texas and California did this month.
Democrats and civil rights have said the new Texas cards will resolve the power of minority voting, which will violate the Federal Voice Rights Law and threatens to judge.
Critics say the process allows politicians to choose their voters, not voters to choose their chosen employee.
The process leads to some very ghost cards in which certain groups are brought together, regardless of their geographical proximity.
In 2019, the Supreme Court seized the court’s power to block political Gerimander.
“The federal judges do not have a license to redirect the political power between the two major political parties,” Chief Judge John Roberts wrote in his decision at the time.
Redistribution can have significant consequences in the average time in 2026. The presence of more areas in the United States that prefer a political party can direct the balance of forces in the House of US Representatives – and Republicans and Democrats now want to gain this advantage for themselves.
Illinois, New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire and Maryland are among the countries led by Democrats ready to start opposition to the Texas plan.
Indiana, Florida, Missouri and Ohio are now looking for a redistribution to strengthen Republican representation in Washington.
California governor Gavin Newo, whose country is leading the democratic accusation, has promised to “fight fire with fire” by reproducing the actions of Texas.
But the California process is slow because of a 2008 law designed to make the process a little guerrilla.
On August 21, the California state voted to put the new cards to vote on the special elections in the fall to allow voters to decide whether they need to be displaced.
Voting may be controversial as voters have previously approved a process that leaves it to the non -partisan committee to decide how the voting lines should be withdrawn.
In New York, the process takes even more time as the State Constitution will have to be changed.
“In New York, we will face Trump’s legitimate uprising with our heads forward,” New York Governor Katie Hochul bet on Wednesday.
“We will meet him in the same field and beat him in his own game.”
According to experts, countries where Republicans control the bigger part of the government may have easier time to redirect their cards.
Democratic-controlled countries have more legal and constitutional barriers designed to protect against political Gerimander.
Several smaller countries, including Delaware and Vermont, receive only one place in the house – which makes them largely irrelevant to the current battle.
But with so much bet, even these smaller conditions can eventually enter the action.
