The Boker International Buker Award Banu Mushak found herself in the midst of a dispute after being invited to open a prominent festival in the southern Indian State Karnakaka.

Last week, the country’s congress government announced that Mushtaq – which won the award earlier this year for its short history of anthology, Heart Lamp – will open Miseru Dasara’s holidays in Missuro (previously called Mysore).

Mysuru Dasara, also called Naada Habba (which is rudely translated to the Earth Festival in Canada), is an annual 10-day event that has been celebrated for decades.

Thousands of people flock to the city to participate in big festivities, which include cultural performances, elephant parades, exhibitions and fireworks.

The decision to invite Mushak has caused criticism from some leaders of the Bharatiy Party Gianna (BJP) – who is in the opposition in the state – who said that a Muslim born in Karnataka should not be held at the Hindu Festival.

Dussehra is an Hindu festival that celebrates the victory of good over evil, but Missuro Dasara is held by the State Government of Karnataka and the people of all religions join the celebrations.

Mushak said it was an honor to be invited to the festival and that she felt deeply related to him by participating in the festivities as a child.

But despite her expression at the festival, the dispute refused to die.

Some BJP leaders have also been offended by some of Banu’s previous comments related to the Hindu goddess Bhuvanashwari, who is thought to be Canada’s language and identity.

Mushtaq made a story earlier this year when she became the first author to write in the language of Canada to win an international bookmaker.

Her award -winning book “Heart Lamp”, which was translated into English by Deep Bhati, was praised by judges for showing characters who were “amazing portraits of survival and resilience.”

Mushtaq’s stories, including in the heart lamp, focus on the challenges that women, especially Muslim women, face religious conservatism and deeply patriarchal society.

Interestingly, she is not the first Muslim to be invited to open the MySuru Dasara Festival. In 2017, KS Nisar Ahmed, a poet and author of Canada, received the honor.

But the invitation to Mushtaq came under BJP.

BJP Yaduveer Wadiyar MP has recognized the influence of Mushtaq on Kannada’s writing, saying that her Boker’s victory brought a “great pride” to the literary brotherhood in Canada.

However, he added that the Missuru Dasara Festival was not a cultural event, but the Hindu religious festival and asked for a pity to “clarify his reverence” to the two Hindu diets related to the festival before agreeing to find it.

BJP Pratap Simha’s leader said that although it is good for Mushtaq to chair literary festivals, It was not acceptable to her Be the main guest of an event like Mysuru Dasara. He also questioned whether Mushak has faith in the goddesses of the festival and whether she follows the Hindu traditions.

Against the background of criticism, a video of a speech made by Mushtaq last January has begun to be distributed online.

In her speech, she called into question the practice of associating the Hindu deity (Bhuvanashwari) to Canada’s language and identity, pointing out that it was an exclusion for her and other Muslims in the country.

Mushtaq is not the first author to look at this blurring of identities through a critical lens. Many progressive state writers criticize what they call “Hindus” in the language and identity of Canada.

Proponents of the invitation to Mushak say that order is not only about her religious identity, but that it is a greater battle between preserving one of the largest festivals in the country open to all religions and making it a majority event.

“Misuro Dasara is a secular festival and invites Banu to enter that it is one of the best things that can happen to a yard. Turning this into a problem for religion or hinduta (Hindu nationalist agenda) is deteriorating,” says Mama Sagar, taken over by Canada.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Karnakak DK Shivakumar defended his government’s decision to invite Mushak, emphasizing the inclusive character of the festival.

Mushtaq also did not worship pressure to reduce the invitation.

“Active politicians must have an idea of what to politicized and what not,” she told the Hindu newspaper.
