US President Donald Trump took a gambling by inserting the US into a worsening conflict between Israel and Iran, but that may have been paid – at least for now.
Trump announced on Monday night that the two countries agreed to end the fire, which he said he could lead to lasting peace.
If the US president has actually put an end to what he defined the “12 -day war”, it would lead to a significant step back from the edge of a conflict that seemed on the verge of swallowing the region, along with the pull of America, after US air strikes hit the Iranian nuclear facilities on Saturday.
“Provided that the Israeli regime stops its illegal aggression against the Iranian people not later than 4 hours,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi said in a statement, “We do not intend to continue our response afterwards.”
It may not be called the cessation of fire, but since the deadline of 04:00 arrived in Tehran, according to the announcements, the Israeli attacks stopped. Both sides seem to be on the threshold of the heat switching off.
This development comes after a stormy day in the region, when Iran followed its promise to avenge the US strike in the United States.
According to early reports, all Iranian missiles aimed at the massive US base in Qatar were caught and there are no US casualties or damage.
During his address to the nation on Saturday night, President Trump warned that there would be a huge American response to any Iranian attacks on US interests. He promised that there are more goals that can be struck by US forces, if necessary.
For more than 24 hours, the world was waiting to see what Iran would do. After Iran had acted, the attention returned to the US president and after a few hours he had his first word.
“Iran officially responded to our deletion of their nuclear facilities with a very weak answer, which we expected and very effectively counters,” Trump published on his social media site.
He said Iran had removed it from their “system” and added that “maybe Iran can already move to peace and harmony in the region.”
While the damage was reported to be limited, Trump seemed inclined to hold his fire in the hope that the Iranians would be ready to negotiate seriously. And behind the scenes, the White House says he spoke with the Qatarician intermediaries and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to understand the details of the cessation of the fire.
Trump’s attack over the weekend against Iran was a high -risk maneuver, but a scenario where the payments are already in sight.
Such a dynamics played out in January 2020, when Trump ordered the purposeful murder of Iranian Revolutionary Guard leader Casem Soleimani in Baghdad.
Iran launched rockets at military bases in Iraq, injuring more than 100 US soldiers, but the US chose not to escalate. In the end, the cooling heads prevailed.
According to US media, at its last Monday attack, Iran launched a number of missiles into US bases equal to the total number of bombs that US military aircraft dropped during their weekend attack.
This, together with the preliminary notice, Iran provided to the Qatari government before the launch, which Trump said he was grateful, suggests that the Iranians were seeking proportionality, not escalation.
During the bigger part of the day, Trump was more focused on the price of oil, US media coverage and the proposal of former Russian President Dimitri Medvedev that the outside provided Iran nuclear weapons.
US officials have said that this president is following his threats, unlike some of his predecessors.
If Iran started another round of attacks – and there were US deaths or significant damage – the pressure would respond to Trump to answer.
For the moment, however, he seemingly looking outside the ramp to more battles, and both sides seem to be willing to entertain him.
