Last Friday, Israel began huge air strikes on Iran, which made Tehran avenge rocket barges.
In a video message that day, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the Iranian people that in addition to Israel’s goal to thwart Iran’s nuclear program, “we are also clearing the way to achieve your freedom.”
Some sections of Iran’s split opposition have gathered behind Netanyahu’s call. Others are distrustful of his purpose.
There are no official opposition groups in Iran, where authorities have long since disagreed, including a wave of mass executions and closed in the 1980s.
Since then, most opposition groups have been acting from abroad, including two of the most organized groups: supporters of Reza Pavwi’s pro-monarchy, son of Iran’s last chess, and the organization of Mohadn-e Chalk (MKO).
It is becoming increasingly difficult for journalists to contact people in Iran because of the authorities who limit access to the Internet and social media.
We have been able to talk to a few young Iranians who have opposed the regime – and in recent days have protested against it – in recent days.
Their names have been changed for their safety, as Iranian authorities often close opponents in an attempt to suppress disagreement.
The 26 -year -old Tara told the BBC that when Israel issues evacuation warnings before strikes, authorities exclude access to the Internet, “so that people do not understand and the death rate will rise.
A checkpoints and fees are also being created, she says, accusing authorities of “deliberately” creating a traffic that “encourages people to stay in target areas.”
“Talking about patriotism, unity and enemy straightening is absurd. Our enemy has been killing slowly for decades. The enemy is the Islamic Republic!”
The Israeli military issues evacuation warnings via Telegram and X, which are banned in Iran. Combined with limited access to the Internet, it means that it is difficult for Iranians to see warnings.
The 27 -year -old Sima tells us that she is no longer interested in it.
“I want Israel to do the job as soon as possible. I am exhausted. Although I am not yet a fan of Israel or what it does, I hope they will finish what they have started.
“Desirable thinking, I know. But I want them to get rid of the world of the threat of IRGC (the Islamic Revolutionary Corps of Security), (Ayatola Ali) Hamenei and Ayatol as a whole.”
Hamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, is a commander -in -chief of the Armed Forces, including the powerful IRGC, which is charged with defending the Islamic system and observing Iran’s ballistic missiles. The recent Israeli strikes have killed many senior IRGC figures, including his commander Jose Salami.
Some people we talked to were even stronger in their support for Israel’s attacks.
23 -year -old Amir said he supported them “100%”. Asked why, he said he believed that no one else was ready to take over the regime.
“Not the UN, not Europe, even we. We tried, remember?
Amir refers to the widespread protests in Iran after the death of Masha ammins. The 22-year-old died at the police arrest in 2022 after being arrested for allegedly violating rules requiring women to carry the headscarf.
Norway -based human rights group in Norway said 537 protesters were killed by the State Security Forces during the unrest. The government’s official line is that “security forces acted with responsibility,” accusing the death of violent protesters or foreign agitators.
The protest raller – “Woman, Life, Freedom” – is repeated by Netanyahu on Friday in English and Persian, as he urges the Iranians to “stand up and let your voices be heard.”
Iran officially did not respond to the calls of the Israeli prime minister, but some solid and media figures made fun of and rejected the remarks. Meanwhile, authorities warn of sharing campaigns and statements by Israeli and US officials.
However, some opponents of the Islamic Republic are suspicious of Netanyahu’s intentions.
“I participated in the protests (in 2022) because then I had hope to change the regime. I just do not see how the regime can be removed in this conflict without being destroyed in the process,” said Navid, a 25-year-old activist who was arrested briefly during the protests.
“Israel also kills ordinary people. At one point, people will start taking the country of the Islamic Republic,” he added.
The 26 -year -old Daria said, “I think the fact that people do not go out to protest is already a clear answer” for Netanyahu’s call.
“I wouldn’t go, even if Israel bombarded my house. Netanyahu hides behind the Iranian nationalist slogans and pretends to help Iranians reach freedom while he is directed to residential areas. It will take years just to restore the country.”
The 22 -year -old Arez said he didn’t know what to think.
“I hate the regime and I hate what it did. But when I see bombs that fall, I think of my grandmother, my little cousin. And I saw what Netanyahu did with gas – do you really think he was interested in the Iranians? It’s not for us, but for the (Israeli) politics,” she said.
“I feel like I have to choose between two evils and I can’t. I just want my people safe. I want to breathe without fear.”
The 27 -year -old said, “I want this regime to disappear more than anything – but not so. Not through more bombs, more death.”
“Israel is not our savior. When innocent people die, it is not a step towards freedom, it is another form of injustice. I do not want to trade with one kind of horror for another. I am against this regime and also against this war. We deserve a better way out of it.”
